Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea Empty Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea

Post  Admin Fri Dec 18, 2009 1:07 pm

Full time: Howard Webb blows the final whistle after a truly brilliant game, and City have recorded a memorable win. Lampard will reflect on what might have been after his penalty was saved by Given, but on reflection City were full value for the three points. The result moves them past Liverpool into sixth place, but will be cheered by their rivals across the City because Manchester United now trail Chelsea by just two points.

90+5 After a string of worrying moments for City, they finally clear the danger. Wright-Phillips goes down but is soon back on his feet to run down the right and win a throw-in.

90+4 City waste a counter-attack as Tevez picks the wrong pass in a three-on-three situation, and then Toure concedes a corner down at the other end.

90+3 City are camped in their third of the pitch, and Tevez comes back to nick the ball away as Chelsea ponder how to make their way through.

90+2 Robinho is giving a round of applause as he makes way for Pablo Zabaleta.

90+1 Tevez is put through on the left, but by the time he's in the Chelsea area Ivanovic has caught him. He gets the shot away and nearly squeezes it in at the near post but Cech manages to squirm it behind for a corner.

90 Lampard turns on the edge of the area and sets up Anelka, but his scuffed shot is saved by Given as he dives to his right. There will be five minutes of added time!

89 Some neat passing between Adebayor and de Jong allows them to work the ball forward before the former runs the clock down in the corner.

88 Just a few minutes remaining in what's been an epic match, and Terry limps off to be replaced by Florent Malouda. So that's both central defenders lost by Chelsea.

87 Huge miss from Drogba, who'd done all the hard work after receiving Essien's slide-rule pass to drift into the penalty area. With only Given to beat, he sidefoots it wide of goal!

86 City don't commit any players forward for the free kick, which is booted cross field to Adebayor and sails over his head and out for a free kick.

85 Ashley Cole is the latest player to go in the book after fouling Tevez when he was launching a counter-attack. he tries to walk away from the referee but that was never going to work.

84 Still Chelsea are pouring forward, and de Jong makes a really good block as Belletti attempts to cross from the right. De Jong has been magnificent.

83 Penalty saved! Lampard puts it to Given's right, but the keeper goes the right way to preserve City's lead!

82 City have been sitting back, and Drogba wins a penalty after controlling a long ball, taking it past Onuoha before being hacked down by the substitute.

81 Crunching tackles are flying in as Chelsea try and work the ball forward. The crowd are going ballistic.

80 Ivanovic wins a free kick as Tevez tries to get round him, and things are threatening to boil over here. Play goes down the other end where City gratefully get a free kick as Drogba pushes a defender in the back inside the City area.

79 Adebayor looks to be away down the left but Ivanovic knocks him off the line of the ball. He receives a yellow card but reacts by screaming at the referee.

78 Barry has moved to left-back, and he's forced to clear to the sidelines with Drogba coming in round the back of him.

77 City win a free kick on the left, but Cech is fouled as he punches Tevez's delivery clear so Chelsea win a free kick.

76 Bridge isn't in a good state, and is stretchered off as Vincent Kompany replaces him. Eastlands rises to applaud Bridge, but City now face 15 minutes without their first-choice fullbacks. Barry might slot in at left-back with Kompany in the midfield.

75 Belletti and Bridge slide in for what appears to be a 50-50 ball, but the Chelsea man catches his opponent late and is shown a yellow card. Bridge needs some attention after a hefty collision.

74 Chelsea take a free kick quickly to play Anelka down the left, but he sends his cross out of play for a goalkick.

73 Drogba goes up and wins a header which then trickles through to Given, but he's still holding his shoulder.

71 Drogba's down holding his shoulder after a bbizarre off-the-ball collision with Bridge. As is generally the case with Drogba he's fine to carry on once he feels he's made his point to everyone involved, although he's still clutching his left shoulder as play continues.

70 Chelsea surge forward and play the ball out to Belletti on the right, but his cross is blocked and cleared. He seems to be playing as a right-winger rather than a centre-back as Chelsea throw men forward.

69 Richards has a knee problem, and limps off to be replaced by Nedum Onuoha. That's a big blow for City because Richards has been immense.

68 This time Ivanovic meets the corner in the centre of the six yard box, but heads just over the crossbar. Chelsea pressure building now.

67 Lescott and Terry wrestle as the corner is taken, with Terry falling to the floor, and the ball is headed over at the far post for another corner.

66 A measured Chelsea build-up sets Cole up for a shot on the left, but Richards dives in to make the block. Corner to Chelsea.

65 Cole lifts the ball forward to Drogba, but once again Drogba is caught offside.

64 Double substitution for Chelsea, but it's not what we expected. Carvalho is replaced by Juliano Belletti - I can only think that's an injury - while John Obi Mikel comes on for Ballack.

63 Barry goes in the book for a clumsy challenge, and Chelsea have a free kick on the right hand side. Lampard swings it in, but Ivanovic can't make meaningful contact on the volley so Given collects.

62 Huge let-off for City as Lampard drifts a long ball into the City area and Given doesn't come for it. Drogba's header sails just wide of the left post from just five yards out.

61 A good build-up by City ends with Robinho's weak left-footed shot being deflected to Cech off a Chelsea defender.

60 Hughes is a model of calm on the touchline, which is a little surprising given his team have rattled Chelsea here. Adebayor is caught offside rather unnecessarily over on the left.

59 Barry tries to slide the ball forward for Adebayor, but his pass is too strong and runs through to Cech.

58 City deserve their lead, and it;s no surprise to see Carlo Ancelotti sending his reserves off for a warm-up. Ballack and Deco have both been ineffectual and Joe Cole will surely see some action soon.

56 GOAL! Tevez puts City ahead! There was plenty of jostling and the free kick took ages to take, but when it is Tevez curls it round a small wall and Cech finds himself wrong-footed, going the wrong way and then unable to make his ground as he dived back to his left.

54 Carvalho wins the ball on the edge of his own area, but the referee isn't happy with the height of his boot so City have a free kick in a dangerous position.

53 Nearly a second for City as Wright-Phillips takes on Ashley Cole and gets in behind him. Despite some 'robust' tactics from Cole he's able to drag the ball back into the centre of the penalty area but Adebayor's shot is saved by Cech.

52 Anelka and Deco both try to play the ball over the top to Drogba, but on both occasions Lescott is there to head away.

51 Chelsea allowed City far too much space in the middle of the park and thus did a lot of defending in the first half, but they've been much tighter since the break.

50 City launch a counter-attack down the right through Wright-Phillips, but he finds himself surrounded by three Chelsea players and eventually loses possession.

49 Drogba is caught offside for the third or fourth time in the match, and engages in a bit of a debate with referee Howard Webb.

48 Tevez sends a high cross into the penalty area from the right-hand side, but it's easily claimed by Cech.

47 The ball changes possession three or four times in the middle third of the field as both sides look to find their rhythm after the break.

46 The rain is still pouring down as Chelsea get the match back underway at Eastlands.

Manchester City's odds have been slashed, and SkyBet are now offering 14/5 on a home win after a really impressive first half from Mark Hughes' men. Meanwhile Chelsea's odds have lengthened to 13/10, and you can get 7/5 on the draw.

A couple of things worth mentioning at the break. One is that Chelsea were appealing for handball during the City goal - as Wright-Phillips' drive came in it struck Richards on the arm, though the arm was tucked up near his body. Watch the highlights later and draw your own conclusions. It also has to be said that Adebayor was totally to blame for his own goal because he should never have been standing on his own goal line. Given was rightly incensed.

Half time: Chelsea are forced to make a couple of last-ditch defensive headers before the whistle is blown on a breathless first half. It's been hugely entertaining, played at great pace and the match is intriguingly set up for the second 45 minutes.

45+1 Tevez dinks the ball past Terry on the right-hand side and is taken out by the defender, and the referee shows Terry a yellow card.

45 We'll just have the one minute of added time at the end of the first half.

44 Drogba's had plenty of success from free kicks from this range of late, and he comes very close again here as he bends it just wide of the top right-hand corner.

43 The tackles fly in as Chelsea try to play through the centre of the park, and they win a free kick just outside the City penalty area. Eastlands goes silent in anticipation.

42 Lampard's weaving run is ended by Barry and Richards, as play largely takes place inside the middle third of the pitch.

41 Drogba looks to have been played in, but he's marginally offside. Down at the other end Tevez's long-range shot flies miles wide.

40 Chelsea win a corner but it's headed clear by the City defence. Deco gains possession but dithers too long and has de Jong dive in to kick the ball out for a throw-in.

39 This time Cech comes out to claim the corner, having learnt his lesson from the previous set piece.

38 That's no more than City deserve I hasten to add. They've made all the running in this half and they're at Chelsea again here, forcing another corner.

37 GOAL The pressure finally tells and it's Adebayor who gets his name on the scoresheet, this time at the right end. Cech punches a corner out to the edge of the area, but it's drilled back in by Wright-Phillips. His shot hits a City player but the ball bounces around inside the six yard box before falling to Adebayor, who slides it in.

35 Cech comes for the cross but doesn't get there. Instead Richards heads towards goal and Carvalho launches himself backwards to head over. It might have gone wide but Carvalho wouldn't have known.

34 Anelka and Richards go head-to-head once more, this time with the City player attacking down the right, and Richards is slightly fortunate to win a free kick after appearing to lose the ball.

33 Anelka intercepts Lescott's attempted pass and gives chase as the ball rebounds into space. However Richards is quicker than him and wins the free kick as Anelka climbs on his back.

32 A stuttering City attack leads to Wright-Phillips' hopeful shot hitting a Chelsea defender, then rebounding off the City player and out for a throw-in.

31 De Jong fouls Essien near the halfway line, so Chelsea can take their time and enjoy a quick breather.

30 City win another corner, and though Cech again punches away the ball is twice headed back into the Chelsea area. The home side are building waves of pressure here but need to make it count.

29 De Jong is bundled over by Drogba to give City a free kick40 yards out. Barry's delivery is punched clear by Cech.

28 Again Robinho takes on Ivanovic, and again the Chelsea defender does well and comes away with the ball. Good duel developing there.

27 Cech comes out to claim the corner, but City soon have the ball back and win another. This one's headed out by an off-balance Lescott when he should have left it for Robinho behind him.

26 Wright-Phillips shimmies his way into the box, then unleashes a cracking shot from a narrow angle which Cech can only block. The ball goes out for a throw-in after which City manage to set up Barry for a shot from the edge of the area, and that's deflected wide for a corner.

25 Anelka thinks of taking on Bridge, then whips in a cross-cum-shot which is dragged well wide of goal.

24 City are enjoying a lot of the ball and are focusing their efforts on the flanks. On this occasion it doesn't work as Ashley Cole blocks Wright-Phillips' attempted cross.

23 The rain is pouring down and has been all evening, which has also contributed to the frantic pace of the match so far.

21 Some brilliant work down the left puts Bridge in behind the defence, but his cutback is just behind Adebayor who can't pull the ball round to get it on target. Instead it flies wide to leave City ruing a missed opportunity.

20 A late challenge from Ivanovic earns City a free kick and the referee has a quick word with the defender.

19 Toure goes on a jinking run and somehow finds his way past three or four Chelsea players before having a dip from just outside the penalty area. Unfortunately for City the shot is straight at Cech.

18 Robinho tries to play Ivanovic inside-out but the Chelsea defender's nimble footing ensure's he's not to be fooled, and he wins the ball back before clearing upfield.

17 Robinho's clever flick over the top of the defence puts Bridge in down the left, but his cross into the penalty area is poor and easily cleared.

16 A battle of strength between Drogba and Joleon Lescott by the corner flag results in a free kick for City.

15 Frank Lampard tries to set up Michael Essien 25 yards out, but Robinho gets back to nip in and steal the ball.

14 Ivanovic brings down Robinho as the Brazilian looks to break clear from his own half. Free kick to City.

13 Barry's corner finds the head of Richards, but he's unable to keep it down and the ball flies well over the crossbar.

12 Shaun Wright-Phillips' cross is deflected off Anelka and goes behind for a corner.

11 Wayne Bridge's shot from 40 yards out is easily blocked by Terry.

10 The Chelsea fans are boucning up and down in one corner of the ground but elsewhere it's noticeably quieter.

8 GOAL A little unfortunate for City as Adebayor ends up with an own goal to his name. A cross is headed back across goal to Ivanovic whose shot is brilliantly saved by Given from point-blank range. It ricochets straight to Anelka whose shot is also saved by Given, but this time it bounces onto the back of Adebayor and into the goal.

8 First save of the evening, and it's made by Shay Given. Deco's backheel drops into the path of Didier Drogba as he sauntered in from the right wing, but his left-footed shot is blocked by Given.

7 End-to-end stuff as first Kolo Toure puts in a crucial tackle in his own penalty area, and then Tevez chips straight into the arms of Petr Cech. There's a real buzz around Eastlands which is having a clear effect on the tempo of the game.

6 Tevez knocks the free-kick sideways to set up Nigel de Jong on the edge of the area, but he sidefoots his shot wide of the goal. Nevertheless it's been an electric start by City.

5 A hyperactive Robinho plays a one-two on the left-hand side and is bundled to the ground by two Chelsea defenders, so Manchester City have a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

4 First excitement of the match as Carlos Tevez takes on John Terry on the right and beats him. Tevez chips the ball in to the top of the six-yard box but Chelsea scramble the ball clear.

3 A chip over the top from Nicolas Anelka almost puts Ashely Cole in behind but Micah Richards gets back to concede a throw-in.

2 Emmanuel Adebayor gets his first touch of the game, but it's on the heavy side and Ricardo Carvalho is able to clear the danger from the edge of his area.

1 The atmosphere is brilliant as Manchester City kick off from left to right.

The two sides are shaking hands so we'll be underway shortly. Chelsea are wearing their dark blue and black away kit that looks very much like Inter Milan's.

Chelsea are clear favourites with SkyBet, who are offering odds of 10/11 on an away win. Manchester City are 3/1 while the draw stands at 5/2 prior to kick-off.

Prashanth writes in from my favourite city in which to watch cricket, Bangalore. As a Man United fan he's optimistic: "After the Carling Cup debacle this is not quite the 'bounce back game' that Chelsea will have hoped for. It'll be a tight game but i think Man City are good enough to hold chelsea 2-2!" However Henrik Bruun from Denmark, "True Blue since 1970", thinks otherwise though: "Chelsea is too strong for the sky blues, 3-0 chelsea," he predicts.

Man City: Given, Richards, Toure, Lescott, Bridge, De Jong, Barry, Wright-Phillips, Tevez, Robinho, Adebayor

Subs: Taylor, Onuoha, Zabaleta, Johnson, Santa Cruz, Petrov, Kompany

Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Carvalho, Terry, Ashley Cole, Essien, Ballack, Lampard, Deco, Drogba, Anelka

Subs: Hilario, Joe Cole, Mikel, Malouda, Zhirkov, Paulo Ferreira, Belletti

Referee: Howard Webb (S Yorkshire)

Team news: Robinho returns to the Manchester City starting line-up as the Blues look to derail Premier League leaders Chelsea. The Brazilian replaces Craig Bellamy while Gareth Barry partners Nigel de Jong in central midfield with Stephen Ireland ruled out with a knee injury. Carlo Ancelotti brings back all his senior men, including one-time City target John Terry, but Joe Cole is back on the bench as the visitors look to record their ninth successive win against City.

Welcome to coverage of Manchester City versus Chelsea from Eastlands. This should be the clash of the weekend, but with Chelsea in such imperious form and Manchester City's ordinary run in the league the Londoners are obvious favourites. Mark Hughes' men can take some encouragement from their convincing win over Arsenal in midweek, but that side involved several Arsenal youngsters so a full-strength Chelsea side will be a different prospect altogether. As we await kick-off
