Aston Villia 2-1 Chelsea Empty Aston Villia 2-1 Chelsea

Post  Admin Thu Dec 17, 2009 3:06 pm

All over. Tremendous from Villa to come from a goal behind and win - their two central defenders were brilliant defensively as well as scoring. For Chelsea, though, it's two defeats in as many away games in the Premier League and Manchester United can climb above them later today.

90+4 Heskey does well to charge down an Ashley Cole clearance and hold the ball in the corner.

90+3 Anelka gets the flick to the free-kick but gets too much on it and Ashley Cole can't keep it in.

90+2 Young runs the clock down a little but then inexplicably attempts to cross. Chelsea break and Milner is penalised for a foul on Lampard. Yellow card. He can't - and won't - complain.

90+2 Terry straight back on after the modern-day equivalent of a cold sponge in the face. Chelsea desperately pushing for an equaliser here but can they find it?

90+1 Terry down after a tangle with Heskey. Looks like he caught an arm in the face but pretty innocuous to be honest.

90 We'll have (at least) Three minutes of added time.

89 Villa holding firm here. Collins and Dunne have been rocks.

88 Warnock tries to spring Milner beyond the last man but Cech is out quickly to see off the danger.

87 Chelsea building from the back as they look for a late leveller.

86 Agbonlahor skips away from Terry, who attempted a bizarre attempt to clear, but his cross from the right is poor.

86 Looks like Deco has moved to the left of the Chelsea midfield diamond with Joe Cole at the head of it.

85 Fourth time 'lucky' for Joe Cole as he replaces Malouda after 90 seconds standing on the touchline waiting to come on.

84 Joe Cole is stripped and ready for action but the ball has gone out three times without him coming on. Odd.

83 Agbonlahor and Heskey force Cech to rather rush a clearance and Villa are able to pick it up, but then a breakdown in communication between the same duo sees the Blues clear.

82 Heskey replaces Carew as Villa's sole frontman.

82 Corner half-cleared to Essien around 25 yards but his shot meets a wall of Villa bodies and the ball is hacked clear.

81 Young has the ball nicked away from him by Essien, who sets Chelsea on the attack. Good ball in from Anelka towards Drogba which Cuellar turns behind for another corner.

80 The free-kick is worked across the box but it's a brilliant challenge from Warnock to nick the ball away. It's worked back to Lampard but his shot is comfortable for Friedel.

80 Free-kick Chelsea in a dangerous position out on their left with Cuellar penalised for a foul on Malouda. Heskey on his way for Villa, presumably once this free-kick is taken.

79 All hands to the pump for Villa - Agbonlahor has moved back into a right-midfield role with Carew the sole frontman.

78 Milner nicks into the challenge around 25 yards from his own goal to toe-prod it clear. Young has little support but tries to cross for Carew only for the ball to sail behind.

77 Milner overplays on the edge of the Chelsea box...though in hindsight maybe he realised Carew had strayed beyond the last defender. Grandstand finish on the cards here.

76 Agbonlahor offside again as Carew gets a flick to a long clearance from Friedel.

75 Drogba penalised for a foul on Petrov. Cheap.

74 Friedel to the rescue again for Villa after a lovely move from Chelsea. Malouda slides in Anelka but he opts for a prod rather than a powerful drive and Friedel saves again. As the ball breaks out Anelka fires in another shot but it's well off target.

73 Brilliant angled ball from Young to Milner, who volleys it straight across goal with his first touch. Carew raises a telescopic left leg but can't divert it goalwards. Great chance.

72 Poor touch from Ivanovic as he knocks the ball straight out for a goal-kick.

71 Young's corner is whipped in beyond the back post and Essien turns it behind for another flagkick. This one is right onto the head of Dunne but he heads wide. Carvalho was in attendance but he should have done better there.

70 Corner to Villa, but Young just hobbling before he takes it.

69 Branislav Ivanovic on for Bosingwa, who has hobbled off. Looks to be a problem with his left leg, possibly his ankle.

68 Bosingwa down - he'll need treatment.

67 Milner attempts to thread the ball through to Agbonlahor from inside the D on the edge of the Chelsea box but the ball just gets trapped under his feet and the Blues clear.

66 Excellent defending from Warnock on his own byline as he nicks the ball away from Boswinga then draws the foul as he runs down the touchline.

65 Atmosphere just gone a bit subdued here. You'd have thought the Villa fans would be roaring their taem on but maybe they're a bit nervous as Chelsea look to press again.

64 Lovely ball in behind from Deco to Cole, but his cutback just squirms away from Drogba and Anelka, with Warnock coming around from left-back to hack clear with Lampard waiting behind him for any slip.

63 Carew gets a flick to a Friedel clearance and for a moment Agbonlahor looks to have a yard on Terry, but the flag is up for offside.

62 Lampard angles in a shot but Collins hacks clear. Was sailing wide anyway but better to be safe than sorry.

61 Free-kick Villa as Drogba is penalised for a foul on Dunne.

60 Malouda powers in a shot from 20 yards which Friedel saves pretty comfortably. Chelsea cranking things up here...

59 Corner taken short and Malouda whips it in but Dunne clears centrally with Drogba right on his shoulder.

58 Quite brilliant ball from Drogba through to Deco. He takes a touch but scuffs his shot and Friedel is able to save. Dunne smacks it behind for a corner.

57 Essien fires in a daisycutter of a shot from distance but it's straight down Friedel's throat.

56 Milner whips a cross in from the right but Bosingwa comes across from right-back to clear.

55 Lampard's ball in cleared by Collins. Interesting stat by the way - for all Villa's attacking prowess in Agbonlahor and Young, they've now scored nine of 12 goals in the Premier League this season from set-pieces!

54 Chelsea have responded well to going behind - they've forced another corner.

53 Villa fans unsurprisingly bullish now. Lampard on the attack, though, but his shot fires wide. Just seen a replay of the Villa goal and it's fair to say Terry was incandescent. Looks like Anelka was the man in the frame.

52 GOAL - COLLINS. Young's whipped corner finds Collins unmarked at the back post and he needs no second invitation, producing a powerful header which gives Cech no chance. Dreadful defending. Of all the people to leave unmarked...

51 Corner to Villa as Boswinga turns a ball from Carew towards Young behind.

50 Drogba powers the free-kick straight into the wall. Went for the direct Ronaldo-style run-up but a poor effort ultimately.

50 Great chance for Chelsea here - free-kick 25 yards out centrally as Carew is penalised for a foul on Drobga, who fancies it.

49 Collins misses a long punt downfield but Friedel is out quickly to gather on the edge of his area with Anelka sniffing a shooting opportunity.

49 Bosingwa curls a lovely ball in but Cuellar does well to get in front of Drogba and half-clear. Worked back in and Friedel punches, albeit unconvincingly, with Dunne completing the clearance.

48 Warnock lofts another ball into the Chelsea box. Better this time, though Cech punches clear powerfully.

47 Free-kick for Villa centrally this time as Lampard is penalised. Wasted, though, and Chelsea look to build from the back.

46 Early throw for Villa deep in Chelsea territory as Terry gets across well to track Agbonlahor. Ball in from Warnock is a poor one, though. It's catching practice for Cech.

45 Villa get us back under way.

Half-time update from Sky Bet - they go 7/2 Villa and 6/4 the draw. It's Evens for both a Chelsea win and over 3.5 goals, while the lively Agbonlahor is 10/1 to score next.

And that's half-time. After the officiating shambles pre-match it's been a really entertaining game. Villa had a penalty appeal turned down, Chelsea went in front pretty much against the run of play then dominated until Villa equalised then the home side had the better of it until the break. Hopefully more of the same to follow after the break.

45+2 Cech does well to race from goal and hack clear with Agbonlahor looking to latch onto it.

45+2 Warnock whips an inswinging free-kick in but it's much too close to Cech and he gathers unchallenged. Was sailing out anyway.

45+1 Agbonlahor looks to turn the afterburners on down the right and skips clear of Cole, who brings him down. Yellow card - and he can have no complaints.

45+1 We're into (at least) two minutes of added time.

45 Great ball in from the right towards the unmarked Sidwell by Agbonlahor but it flies only a couple of inches above his head. How they wish that was Carew there. Villa work it back to the right but Agbonlahor is penalised for a foul on Cole. Carew volleyed over his header into the centre anyway.

44 Warnock crosses from the left but though it sails over those in the middle Agbonlahor chases it down. He then spoils the good work by attempting a ridiculously ambitious ball through to Sidwell which Malouda clears.

43 Anelka attempts a speculative effort of his own this time, but from an angle it's always flying across goal and Friedel has no need to intervene.

42 Villa press on the counter and Carvalho looks to be struggling to get back...but then finds a turn of pace from somewhere to halt the attack.

41 Drogba converts the throw into yet another corner but again Collins climbs highest to head clear. Worked back into the box and Drogba has a shooting chance but again Collins blocks. He's been solid as a rock so far.

41 Corner a poor one but it's only half-cleared by Villa and Chelsea come again. Carvalho clips the ball up towards Drogba but Collins climbs highest to head it out for a throw.

40 Anelka attempts to dink a ball into the Villa box and Collins turns it behind for the eighth corner of the half, five for Chelsea.

39 Young ties Bosingwa in knots but as he knocks the ball past him Terry is across quickly to sweep up and clear the danger. Villa first to react when the ball drops, though, and they're pressing.

38 Anelka tries to latch onto a ball in behind the Villa backline but Collins steps up confidently as it's played through and he's offside.

37 Lampard whips the corner in to Drogba at the front post but there's little chance of him getting his header on target from that angle and it sails over.

36 Deco attempts an audacious 20-yard chip which Friedel deals with it albeit not too comfortably He gets across and palms it round the post before colliding with it. Up quickly though.

35 Essien goes down after a tug from Young. Free-kick and Agbonlahor is booked before play resumes, presumably for talking out of turn. Silly.

34 Decent ball in from Bosingwa towards Drogba but Dunne climbs well in front of him - and Anelka is then peanlised for a foul on Milner as he turns and tries to clear at the back post.

33 Dunne now Villa's second-top scorer behind Agbonlahor. He's level with own goals!

32 GOAL - DUNNE. Lovely delivery from the corner and it's Lampard who gets the flick at the front post. Dunne is quickest to react, leaving marker Carvalho in his wake, and powers home his header to level us up.

31 Good hold-up play and a lovely ball from Agbonlahor to find Petrov in the Chelsea box, but his cut-back towards Agbonlahor doesn't reach its target with Essien conceding the corner.

30 Poor from Villa. They work it short initially then Young's cross is all too easy for Cech to gather centrally. Cuellar picks the clearance up, but then fails to find Milner with a pass of no more than 10 yards.

29 Bosingwa gets himself into a tangle after initially winning the ball back from Young. The Villa man snaps into the tackle to get it back and Bosingwa then fouls him. Free-kick about a yard from the byline out on the left as Villa attack.

28 Lampard's curling ball in towards Essien is well cleared by Carew at the front post.

28 Another corner to Chelsea, this time down the right.

27 Good spell of possession football from Villa until Milner passes straight to Bosingwa in trying to lay it wide to Young.

26 Lovely dinked ball into the Villa box from Deco which Drogba takes down a little fortunately. He cuts inside but opts to shoot rather than lay in Anelka and it's a woeful effort.

25 Carvalho heads a long corner back across goal but Villa clear. Chelsea have been invigorated by their goal - they've definitely had the better of the play since then.

24 Malouda skips away from a couple of challengers and smacks in an angled shot but Collins dives at his feet and the ball deflects behind off his body for another corner.

23 Villa fans - and O'Neill - not happy with what they're seeing from referee Friend here. He's given another free-kick to Chelsea on halfway.

22 Cole comes racing forward from left-back and jinks past three challengers before lashing in a shot. Would have been a Goal of the Season contender...only the shot sailed wide.

21 Ball worked back into the box from Milner but Carew's header sails well over the crossbar.

20 Lovely ball in from Milner but Terry hacks clear. Strange to see no Villa man making a run across the defence there. They'd have had a tap-in had they moved from the back post.

19 Another incident on the touchline! This time Agbonlahor gives Anelka a nudge near the touchline and the Frenchman barrels into O'Neill, sending him flying. Nothing Anelka could do about that but it'll be no consolation to O'Neill as he gingerly picks himself up from the technical area.

19 Petrov robs Deco and lays the ball off to Agbonlahor but the Portuguese redeems himself by chasing back to nick it back.

18 Poor ball in from Deco. His delivery hasn't been up to scratch so far.

17 Corner to Chelsea as Deco's cross deflects behind off Milner.

16 Real test for Villa now. They've looked really lively early on but now they're behind and Chelsea have won every game they've taken the lead in so far this season.

15 GOAL - DROGBA. Goal out of nothing. Drogba turns Collins all of 35 yards out and smacks in a speculative shot. Friedel should have it easily covered diving to his right but it rears up over him and into the net. Can't be happy with that.

15 Cuellar whips the ball in from deep but again Cech gathers. Had to do slightly more work than previously but not really stretched.

14 Really lively start from Villa this. Ball worked back to Agbonlahor just inside the Chelsea box and he gets the shot in, but it's easy for Cech.

14 Good understanding from the Villa strikers as Carew gets a flick to a long throw and Agbonlahor volleys goalwards. Great block from Carvalho at the expense of a corner, which Cech punches clear.

13 Great break from Chelsea and Malouda lines up a shot from the edge of the box when Milner executes a brilliant sliding tackle to nick the ball off his toes. Villa break quickly but again the ball into the area is a poor one.

12 Agbonlahor goes down in the Chelsea box under pressure from Bosingwa after latching onto a dinked ball from Petrov and the crowd instantly appeal for the penalty. Huge pressure on Friend. Agbonlahor appealed a little late but having seen a replay there was definite contact on the arm from the Chelsea man. Seen them given, but equally seen appeals like that turned down.

11 Wasted opportunity as Young hoists the free-kick straight into the grateful arms of the unchallenged Cech.

10 Pure farce on the touchline. Mr Marriott has now disappeared down the tunnel having been told he's no longer the fourth official. On the field, Bosingway is penalised for a needless challenge from behind on Agbonlahor when he had no chance of winning the ball legally.

10 Better from Chelsea as they work a move down the left but Cole's attempted cross on the slide strikes Cuellar and the Blues have to make do with a throw.

9 Malouda tries to thread a ball through for Anelka but he's just strayed beyond the last defender and the flag is up.

8 Hopefully our officials are now settled for the afternoon. Nigel Marriott has taken charge as fourth official.

7 Ball smacked long towards Drogba but he's penalised in an aerial challenge with Collins.

6 England team-mates Cole and Milner have a coming-together deep in Chelsea territory and the verdict goes the way of the former, giving the Blues the chance to clear.

5 Poor ball in from Deco. It's straight along the floor and former Chelsea man Sidwell pumps it clear with some relish on the edge of the area.

5 Bosingwa cuts in from the right and draws a foul from Young as he offloads the ball inside. Free-kick Chelsea.

4 First touch of the game for Friedel but it's not a comfortable one as a back-header falls on his left foot and he rather shanks the clearance out for a Chelsea throw.

3 Apparently Paul Rejer's role is only a temporary one and he's expecting to be replaced at some point. The plot thickens.

2 Agbonlahor gets in front of his marker at the near post but fails to get a flick on it and Chelsea clear. Should have done better.

2 First corner of the game to Villa as Milner's shot is deflected behind. Good start form the hosts this.

1 High-tempo start from Villa, forcing Chelsea to give the ball away as Cech pumps downfield in a hurry and Milner gets in quickly.

0 Chelsea get us under way.

Thanks to Paul Rejer stepping in as fourth official we're ready to get under way. Bet he didn't realise when he turned up to watch the game that by the time the game kicked off he'd be a hero.

Pretty shambolic this. We're still searching for a fourth official. That said, the teams are now in the tunnel so looks like we might not be too far away from getting under way.

Breaking news here - we're looking at a delayed start. Steve Bennett has reported flu-like symptoms after his warm-up and won't be able to referee. Kevin Friend will take the whistle for the game...and we're currently searching for a fourth official! Any trained referees in the Villa Park area able to help out?!

Chelsea fan Edward Ashford writes: "I think this is a great opportunity to stretch our lead today with Liverpool playing an in-form Sunderland side. If Liverpool slip up and we can grab a win which usually has been a tricky fixture it will give us some breathing space at the top. Great for us to have Joe Cole and Zhirkov giving good options from the bench. I would expect a win today, even though it's a tricky fixture, with all due respect to Villa I think they are yet to hit top for this season. Though they have improved in recent weeks."

Neil, a Blues fan, writes: "I think today will be an eye-opener for Villa. Some say Villa are a contender for a top-four spot. They have a good side, I won't lie, but can they get something out of a hungry Chelsea side? I don't think so. 2-0 Chelsea." Anyone willing to put their head over the parapet for a Villa win?

Thomas Lacey writes: "Chelsea for the win today. 3-0 with Lampard and Anelka to score."

Our friends at Sky Bet go 4/1 the home win, 5/2 the draw and 8/11 a Chelsea win. If you're siding with Nigel, Drogba is 4/1 to be (first and) last goalscorer in the game.

Nigel O'Callaghan writes: "I can see nothing but a win today for Carlo's men! I know Villa Park isn't the easiest of places to go to but Chelsea have a near-perfect record this season, with only that one loss to Wigan. I see it running very close to the wire but that man Didier Drogba is sure to pop up and more than likely fire home to winner with a minute to go!"

As you digest those teamlists, here's a helping hand with the main lines. Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey again has to be content with a place on the substitutes' bench. Villa boss Martin O'Neill keeps faith with the side which drew against Manchester City, with Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew preferred in attack. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti makes three changes to the line-up which defeated Liverpool 2-0 a fortnight ago. Goalkeeper Petr Cech returns from suspension in place of Hilario, Florent Malouda replaces the injured Michael Ballack and Jose Bosingwa recovers from a hamstring setback to take over from Branislav Ivanovic.

Our referee today is Steve Bennett.

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Carvalho, Terry, Ashley Cole, Essien, Malouda, Lampard, Deco, Anelka, Drogba. Subs: Hilario, Ivanovic, Joe Cole, Zhirkov, Kalou, Sturridge, Belletti.

The teams are in. Aston Villa: Friedel, Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Petrov, Milner, Sidwell, Ashley Young, Carew, Agbonlahor. Subs: Guzan, Delph, Heskey, Reo-Coker, Shorey, Beye, Gardner.
